Circuit-breaker comparison and buyer guide

Difference Between MCCB and MCB: Choose by Circuit Duty

The practical difference is scale and control, but there is no universal ampere value that separates the two categories. The right breaker comes from the circuit, fault level and protection study.

Respuesta directa

An MCB is usually the compact choice for lower-current final circuits with a selected fixed trip curve. An MCCB is usually the starting point for feeders, incomers and larger equipment that need a broader current or fault range, adjustable protection or more accessories. Exact ratings and functions depend on the product—not the acronym.

Conceptos básicos de protección

What MCBs and MCCBs both do

Both are resettable overcurrent protective devices. A conventional thermal-magnetic breaker uses a thermal element for sustained overload and a magnetic element for high fault current. The contacts open, and an arc-control system helps interrupt the current.

Shared function

Proteccion contra sobre carga

The breaker responds when current stays above the allowed condition long enough. Its curve must protect the conductor and equipment under the stated reference conditions.

  • Coordinate design current and conductor capacity.
  • Apply ambient, grouping and enclosure corrections.
  • Check load duty and normal inrush.
Shared function

Protección contra cortocircuitos

The breaker opens rapidly during a high fault current. Its interrupting rating must suit the available fault current at the installation point and voltage.

  • Use a short-circuit study or approved method.
  • Check upstream and downstream coordination.
  • Verify any backup or cascading claim.
Overcurrent protection is not every protection function.

A standard MCB or MCCB does not automatically provide residual-current protection, arc-fault protection, surge protection, motor overload protection or an emergency-stop function. A separate device or a documented product-specific feature may be required. See the SENTOP disyuntor de corriente residual page when leakage protection is part of the design.

Calificaciones que importan

Breaking capacity can decide before current rating does

A breaker may carry the normal load and still be unsuitable for the fault current available at its location. Read the value together with its standard, voltage and test meaning.

Icn

Capacidad nominal de cortocircuito

A rating used in the IEC 60898-1 context. Compare it only at the stated voltage and product conditions.

Icu

Capacidad de ruptura máxima

An IEC 60947-2 rating for ultimate short-circuit interruption. Post-fault service can be limited.

Ics

Capacidad de interrupción del servicio

An IEC 60947-2 rating linked to continued service after the defined test sequence.[ 5 ]

Do not compare “10 kA” to “10 kA” without context. The two markings may use different standards, voltages, pole arrangements or definitions. The available fault current can also change greatly between a main bus and a distant branch circuit.

Time-current behavior

MCB curves are usually fixed; MCCB settings may be adjustable

This is a useful difference, but it is not absolute. Fixed-trip MCCBs exist, while some compact breaker families support advanced functions. Verify the exact trip unit.

For many IEC-oriented MCBs, the curve letter describes the instantaneous magnetic-trip band. ABB technical material gives the following AC examples for its cited MCB range.[ 4 ]

B

3–5 × corriente nominal

A common starting direction for lower-inrush loads. The complete curve and fault loop still need verification.

C

5–10 × corriente nominal

A common direction for moderate inrush. Check actual startup current and required disconnection time.

D

10–20 × corriente nominal

A direction for higher expected inrush. It also needs enough fault current to operate as required.

Do not change a curve or trip setting only to stop nuisance trips.

First measure the load and inrush, then check wiring faults, conductors, ambient conditions and coordination. A higher threshold can remove needed protection.

An MCCB trip unit may provide adjustable long-time, short-time, instantaneous or ground-fault functions. Each function depends on the selected family and ordering code. Settings must be calculated, documented and controlled. “MCCB” alone does not mean “adjustable.”

Posición del sistema

MCB and MCCB often work in the same panel

The better question is often not “Which device wins?” It is “Where does each breaker belong?” An MCCB may protect a feeder while several downstream MCBs protect final circuits.

Selectivity, also called discrimination, aims to let the device nearest the fault clear it before an upstream device. It is not proven by size or ampere ratio. Use time-current data and tested manufacturer combinations where applicable.

INCOMER

Protección principal de entrada

Common start: MCCB or ACB. Confirm source capacity, main-bus fault level, busbar rating, settings, neutral treatment and upstream coordination.

ALIMENTADOR

Submain or equipment feeder

Common start: MCCB. Review conductor protection, load duty, adjustable settings, remote accessories and downstream selectivity.

transcripciones

Lighting, sockets and control circuits

Common start: MCB. Match current, cable capacity, curve, poles, prospective fault current, board temperature and grouping.

MOTOR

Motor branch circuit

System-specific. The breaker may provide short-circuit protection, while a starter, overload relay or drive provides the required motor overload function.[ 6 ]

DC / PV

Battery, solar or DC control circuit

Use a specifically rated product. Confirm DC voltage per pole, polarity, poles in series, breaking capacity, energy source and wiring instructions.

Coordinate the breaker layout with the chosen distribution box or enclosure. Mechanical fit does not prove electrical, thermal or certification compatibility.

Ayuda interactiva para la planificación

Build an MCB or MCCB starting direction

Choose the known project conditions. The result helps prepare a technical enquiry. It does not select a model or replace a fault and coordination study.

Resultado de la planificación

Complete the four inputs

Final selection must verify voltage, rated current, conductors, prospective fault current, breaking rating, trip data, poles, installation conditions, standard, certification and coordination.

Flujo de trabajo de selección

Choose the breaker from the circuit in seven steps

The category choice becomes easier after the protection requirements are written down.

Defina el circuito

Record AC or DC, voltage, phases and poles, load type, steady current, inrush, switching duty, conductor and protected equipment.

Define the installation

Record enclosure, ambient temperature, grouping, ventilation, altitude, contamination, mounting and who will operate the breaker.

Establish the fault level

Calculate or document the prospective short-circuit current at the actual breaker location. Do not reuse a value from another panel position.

Choose the standard path

Confirm the product and installation standards, target-market certification, voltage, poles and complete nameplate requirements.

Select the protection behavior

Choose the fixed curve or required long-time, short-time, instantaneous and ground-fault functions. Check conductor and load protection.

Coordinar el sistema

Check upstream and downstream selectivity, backup protection, residual-current needs, motor or DC rules, thermal limits and accessories.

Verify the exact ordering code

Confirm frame, trip unit, terminals, torque, busbar or cable kit, dimensions, handle, accessories, certificates, labels and test documents.

Errores evitables

Common MCB and MCCB selection mistakes

Selecting by ampere rating alone

A breaker can carry the normal load but still have the wrong trip behavior, breaking capacity, voltage rating, standard or coordination. Match the whole circuit.

Assuming every MCCB is adjustable

Fixed-trip MCCBs exist. An adjustable family can also offer different trip units and setting ranges. Specify the protection functions and verify the exact code.

Treating B, C and D as motor ratings

The curve letter describes instantaneous behavior in a stated product context. It does not replace motor starting data, overload protection or coordination.

Using an AC breaker on DC by appearance

DC interruption is product-specific. Use only a model with the required DC voltage, polarity, pole arrangement, breaking capacity and wiring instructions.

Assuming a larger upstream breaker will be selective

A larger rating does not prove discrimination. Compare time-current behavior and use verified manufacturer selectivity or cascading data where required.

Ignoring terminals, torque and enclosure heat

Poor termination and thermal derating can cause overheating or unwanted trips. Use the exact conductor range, torque, spacing and temperature information.

Lista de verificación del comprador y de la solicitud de cotización

“100 A MCCB” or “16 A MCB” is not a complete request

A useful request connects the device to the electrical system, installation and target market. A one-line diagram, panel schedule or clear nameplate photo can shorten model matching.

Preguntas Frecuentes

Questions about the difference between MCCB and MCB

¿Cuál es la principal diferencia entre MCB y MCCB?

An MCB is usually a compact breaker for lower-current final circuits with a selected fixed trip curve. An MCCB is usually used for feeders, incomers or larger equipment that need a broader current or fault range, adjustable protection or more accessories. The exact model data controls the final difference.

¿Un interruptor automático de caja moldeada (MCCB) es siempre mejor que un interruptor automático miniatura (MCB)?

No. An MCCB may be unnecessarily large, complex or costly for a standard final circuit. A suitable MCB is the better choice when its voltage, current, trip curve, breaking capacity, standard and installation conditions meet the circuit.

What current rating separates MCB from MCCB?

There is no universal dividing current. IEC 60898-1 covers household and similar AC breakers up to 125 A within its scope, but product families and standards overlap. Use the marked standard and exact data sheet.

Are MCCB trip settings adjustable?

Often, but not always. MCCBs can have fixed thermal-magnetic, adjustable thermal-magnetic or electronic trip units. Confirm the ordering code, available functions, adjustment ranges and approved settings method.

¿Qué significan B, C y D en un disyuntor miniatura (MCB)?

They identify different instantaneous magnetic-trip bands in the applicable product context. Typical AC examples are B at 3–5 times rated current, C at 5–10 times and D at 10–20 times. Use the exact manufacturer curve for design.

¿Se puede utilizar un disyuntor magnetotérmico (MCB) en un panel industrial?

Yes, when the exact MCB meets the voltage, current, fault, trip, standard, temperature, enclosure and coordination requirements. Industrial use alone does not require an MCCB.

Can an MCCB protect a motor by itself?

Not always. A motor circuit needs short-circuit protection and overload protection matched to the motor system. The MCCB may need coordination with a starter, overload relay or drive.

Can I use an AC MCB or MCCB on DC?

Only when the manufacturer explicitly rates that model and pole arrangement for the required DC circuit. Check DC voltage, polarity, poles in series, breaking capacity and wiring instructions.
